Energy
Performance Certificate
From October 2008, as part of the Energy Performance Of Buildings
Directive (EPBD) all buildings in the UK that are constructed,
sold or rented out will require an Energy Performance Certificate
(EPC).
The overall objective of the EPC is to improve energy efficiency
and the certificate details the energy efficiency of a property
on a scale from A – G as well as a property’s environmental
impact. Included within the certificate are recommendations
and cost effective ways to improve the property’s energy
efficiency. This can result in lower energy bills and lower
carbon emissions.

Improving the energy performance of buildings
Did you know that buildings produce nearly half of the UK’s
carbon emissions? That’s almost twice that of cars and planes.
The way a building is constructed, insulated, heated, ventilated
and the type of fuel used, all contribute to its carbon emissions.
Improving energy efficiency
Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) are being introduced to help
improve the energy efficiency of buildings.
If you are buying or selling a home you now need a certificate by
law. From October 2008 EPCs will be required whenever a building
is built, sold or rented out. The certificate provides 'A' to 'G'
ratings for the building, with 'A' being the most energy efficient
and 'G' being the least, with the average up to now being 'D'.
Accredited energy assessors produce EPCs alongside an associated
report which suggests improvements to make a building more energy
efficient.
